Donna Red Wing to speak at center's annual meeting
Cleveland-With another election year upon us, gays and lesbians are increasingly becoming the focus of attacks by right wing political and religious fundamentalists offering everything from a "cure" for homosexuality to legislation that infringes upon an individual's human rights.
In response to such activity, the Lesbian and Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland is pleased to welcome Donna Red Wing, Human Rights Campaign national field director as the keynote speak-er at our annual meeting on October 25. The event will begin at 3:30 pm at the Lakewood Women's Pavilion in Lakewood Park, Lake and Belle Aves.
Prior to joining HRC, Red Wing had been employed with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation and was instrumental in the successful 1992 fight against Oregon's Ballot Measure 9, a virulently anti-gay ballot measure that would have amended Oregon's constitution to declare homosexuality "abnormal
and perverse" behavior.
The Center
Red Wing's leadership during the fight against Issue 9 made her one of the most
celebrated gay political activists in America. The Advocate magazine that
year named Red Wing its 1992 Woman of the Year. Simultaneously, her adversaries on the right proclaimed Red Wing "the most dangerous women in Oregon"
Red Wing helped create and manage GLAAD's media training programs as well as projects dealing with violence against gay men and lesbians and organizing against anti-gay initiatives. She was also a national spokeswoman for GLAAD, delivering scores of keynote speeches within the gay community.
